New Denver, BC

A mere 5km apart, Silverton and New Denver, located in British Columbia, share a common history rooted in mining and the natural resources that shaped their development.

Silverton, as the name suggests, owes its name to the valuable silver deposits discovered in the area. In the late 19th century, the discovery of silver sparked a mining boom, attracting prospectors and settlers to the region. The town of Silverton emerged as a bustling mining community, with mines and mining-related businesses flourishing. The abundance of silver ore brought prosperity and growth to the town during its heyday. Although the mining industry eventually declined, Silverton's name continues to serve as a reminder of its past and the silver wealth that once defined the area.

New Denver, on the other hand, has a distinct naming story. The town was established in 1892 by William H. Slocan, a prominent mining entrepreneur. Slocan named the town "New Denver" as an homage to the capital city of Denver in Colorado, USA. At the time, Denver was renowned for its successful mining industry, and Slocan hoped to replicate its prosperity in the Canadian Rockies. The name "New Denver" not only reflected Slocan's aspirations but also paid tribute to the American city of Denver, Colorado, hence, "New Denver."

Both Silverton and New Denver flourished as mining towns, attracting a diverse population of miners, entrepreneurs, and laborers. As the mining industry declined, the towns faced challenges, but they managed to adapt and find new avenues for growth and development.

Today, Silverton and New Denver have evolved into charming communities that embrace their history while offering visitors opportunities to explore their natural beauty. They have become havens for outdoor activities, art, culture, and a tranquil lifestyle. The towns' names serve as reminders of their origins and the historical significance of mining in shaping their identities.
